Mike's what?

We were headed to Switzerland over Mike’s birthday this year, so we had to do a little bit of pre-celebrating. Ever since going to Edinburgh for New Year’s Eve, I had it in mind to purchase a bottle of whisky for his 40th.  He tried several while he was there and, not surprisingly, liked several too.  However, a one Bunnahabain stood out in particular.  We never really thought about it until we were in Scotland, but scotch is just referred to as whisky there, not "scotch" as we say in America.  Makes sense.  Anyhow, ever since that trip I’ve kept my eye out for a bottle around here.  When it came time to make a purchase for his birthday, I found that it was nowhere to be found around here.  Apparently distribution outside of Scotland is sparse, so I did what I had to do.  I went straight to the source.

Bunnahabain, pronounced Boonahahvn, is located on Bunnahabain Bay on the north side of the Isle of Islay in Scotland, i.e. middle of nowhere.  I phoned them up, spoke with the distiller’s wife, and two days later I was in possession of Mike’s 40th birthday gift, a bottle of 12 year old single malt Bunnahabain.  I should get mega brownie points for this, right?

Needless to say Mike was very pleased, especially since I purchased some glass tumblers so he could have a proper whisky neat. So, if you want to try some excellent whisky (Dad Thornton, Rick Hagemeier, and Mike Heusdens, this is directed at you guys in particular) you better make your way over to England fast to see us.  Mike’s not joking around.  I think there is about a quarter of the bottle gone already!

Update!  Since it was some time ago that I wrote this and unfortunately it has taken me too long to publish this post, I am sorry to report that the Bunnahabain is no longer with us.  Nothing tragic... Mike just finished it last night!
