We took our time getting up today, yesterday was a long day. We had also decided to stopover somewhere on the way down to Los Angeles as it would be too much to attempt in a day.

We called the valet parking which really helped with loading our bags into the car and set off onto Highway 1.

On the way we stopped at a mall in Sonestown, south of San Francisco. The apple store here told me a day before they actually had some iPads! By the time we got there they were out of stock. This is looking futile now! So we got some lunch and set off on our southwards journey.

The highway headed towards the coast where immediately it began winding around the coastal mountains and as the road continued we passed beaches filled with surfers and sun seekers.

Some time later we pass Monterey and the US Open at Pebble Beach is being played. We didn't seem to hit any traffic which was a boon and we stopped shortly after at a small town called Carmel where Clint Eastwood was once mayor.

After a short stop to view some of the art on display at the small boutique stores we continued south. We would now be entering the Big Sur.

The Big Sur is a section of the California coastline where the Santa Lucia Mountains meet the pacific Ocean. It's name comes from the Spanish name "El Sur Grande" meaning "The Big South". Driving along Highway 1 we cut through the Big Sur and followed the coastline around jagged mountainsides for some striking scenery.  The Ocean really looks ferocious in places and the land equally so. As you continue south the land and sea seem to battle with each other for supremacy, the unstoppable force and the immovable object.

As we left the Big Sur with the sunset behind us we stopped at a large roadside area full of Motels and Hotels to find somewhere to stay for the night. It was easy and cheap to find a place so we spent the night here.
