No turtles last night unfortunately. We went with our guide at 11pm and walked along the beach. We saw the tracks of a turtle who must have nested a few hours before but no turtles themselves. We are here for a few more nights though so will try again.

We started the day with a stroll along the beach down to the Caribbean Conservation Centre, an organisation dedicated to the conservation of turtles. It was still early in the morning though so it was not yet open.

We thought about taking a canoe out into the Tortuguero canal system but it was looking moody so we decided to wait awhile. Sure enough a few minutes later, the skies opened and torrential rain came down and continued for a few hours. Tortuguero is one of the rainiest places on the planet apparently! After the sky cleared, we took our host's canoe out. Soon the sky turned grey again and the heavens re-opened! Fortunately we had our ponchos with us and actually enjoyed the atmospheric experience of paddling in a tropical downpour. It only lasted for about 10 minutes anyway. We followed a small side canal up into thick jungle where Catherine spotted a freshwater turtle and a large bright green frilled lizard, which sat still for a while before running of nearly upright at great speed. Then around the next corner we spotted something even more amazing: a big spectacled caiman, around 1.25m long. He was totally unbothered by us and we spent around 20 minutes just paddling around him and getting some snaps. By now I think our canoeing skills had improved from when we started out and we spent some time just paddling around at the side of the canals looking for other wildlife and soaking up the atmosphere. Saw another Anhinga, some Toucans, Kingfishers and other unknown birdlife before heading back. This paddling is seriously good exercise!
