Like most old European royalty (and modern-day oligarchs), having just one house was not enough for the kings of Poland. Since Warsaw replaced Krakow in 1596 the seat of Polish royalty was the Royal Castle in the center of the city.  However, the kings also built two lavish country palaces on the southern outskirts of the city - Wilanow and Lazienki.  Wilanow is the more lavish and the more distant, about 12 miles south of Warsaw's center, and made for a great bicycle ride from town on a gorgeous April afternoon.
