Vienna seems like a place that wouldn't change much, but there is in fact a new museum district in the city, as well as a slew of other sights I missed in 1996.  Like Munich, Vienna is hardly off-the-beaten-path so I won't explain the sights, but Vienna is also a city for experiences like having a coffee in a cafe frequented by Lenin and Freud, eating Tafelspitz at a heurige (local wine tavern), and attending music performances, the last of which we got to experience at the State Opera House after lining up early evening for last minute standing room space for the night's performance of the opera Manon for a whopping 2 Euros. This space was up in the nosebleed section from which I could actually only see part of the stage and then only when I jostled my way forward in the crowd up to the balcony railing.

Many of Vienna's historic buildings are so monumental that I have heard it said that if the Martians ever came to earth they would naturally assume it's the planet's capital.  The other tale I heard some years ago related to the personality characteristics if the inhabitants of Central European cities.  It was said that if you were running to catch a tram that was leaving the stop and struggling to climb aboard in Budapest the people would cheer you on and help you, in Prague they'd stand and watch indifferently, while in Vienna they'd push you off so you wouldn't further crowd the tram.  Everyone's been perfectly nice to me, though, each time I've been in Vienna.
