Our planned destination for the day was Bryce Canyon National Park but we became intrigued by a funkily named state park near Cannondale just a few miles off our route on the map.  Dave started singing the Paul Simon song and we just had to go there.

Kodachrome is full of towering sandstone "chimneys", the monolithic spires of the iconic Old West scenery of John Wayne movies.  If Kodachrome were part of the larger national monument that surrounds it, the unique landscapes might get overlooked in the overall grandeur of the region, but its status as a separate state marks makes it a destination in itself. Our several short hikes to spots with names like Angel's Palace, Chimney Rock, and Shakespeare Arch didn't do the pretty little park justice.

As is true for many unique geological formations throughout the American West, the explorers of Kodachrome Basin exercised great creativity in naming the pillars and chimneys, mesas and buttes, canyons and arroyos, arches and bridges, hills and holes, often using devil, angel, hell, prophet, apostles, patriarch, and other biblical terms.  The amount of real estate assigned to the devil in the western states is truly astounding.

In keeping with this tradition of nomenclature Dave and I entertained ourselves to no end with various combinations of words to apply to an almost infinite number of unnamed geological features we passed in the days that followed.  For example:

Yeti's Scat
Queen's Clitoris
Devil's Dick
Filthy Children
Suicide Leap
Herod's Harem
Whore's Hideout
Deadman's Landing
Polygamist's Penis
Sasquatch's Scrotum
Black Bitch Canyon
Eli's Erection
Virgin's Vagina

Apply your imagination and name things as you drive around the West; the entertainment possibilities are unlimited!

Kodachrome Lyrics - By Paul Simon

When I think back
On all the crap I learned in high school
It's a wonder
I can think at all
And though my lack of education
Hasn't hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall

Kodachrome
You give us those nice bright colors
You give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah!
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So Mama, don't take my Kodachrome away

If you took all the girls I knew
When I was single
And brought them all together for one night
I know they'd never match
My sweet imagination
And everything looks worse in black and white

Kodachrome
You give us those nice bright colors
You give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah!
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So Mama, don't take my Kodachrome away

Mama, don't take my Kodachrome away

Mama, don't take my Kodachrome away

Mama, don't take my Kodachrome away

Mama, don't take my Kodachrome
Mama, don't take my Kodachrome
Mama, don't take my Kodachrome (away)

Mama, don't take my Kodachrome
Mama, don't take my Kodachrome
Mama, don't take my Kodachrome (away)

Mama, don't take my Kodachrome
(Leave your boy so far from home)
Mama, don't take my Kodachrome (away)
