Essaouira has a fascinating fishing port, not unlike the tanneries in Fez or various workshops in the souks of Moroccan cities where you can see men hard at work in traditional manual professions.  Men here were busy hauling in fish catches, repairing boats, and pulling boats out of the water to dry dock using only muscle power.  The was an active fish auction only a short distance away.  Meanwhile, the morning I was there a boat brought into port a swordfish so massive that all activity stopped for a while for all to gawk at the leviathan.  Some of the best overall views of the fishing port were from the Skala du Port, an old Portuguese seaside fortification also famous as the site of the opening scenes to Orson Welles' adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello, most of which was filmed in and around Essaouira.
