Where I stayed
I stayed up for most of the trip. I did try to sleep at various points on the journey.. but I couldn't shake the feeling someone was going to try and steel our stuff! By the time we made it onto our final train to Prague itself.. I was exhausted and crashed out on the regular seats in a 2nd class carriage.
The day started off while waiting for the train for our final leg to Prague. It was a German town called Naumburg. There is nothing there. And it was bloody cold and windy at 5:30am on that platform.
When we finally arrived into Prague.. we were not quite sure if we were in the right place. The train station was apparently the main train station in Prague.
After some effort trying to figure out the public transport system.. we hopped on a tram and made our way to the hostel we had booked for one night.. Sir Toby's. The Czech Republic is much more affordable than the European countries to the west.. so we decided to "splash out" and got a private room for the evening. It was quite cheap.. about $53 all up!
We really needed more time to explore the city in full.. but as we were pressed for time.. we chose to simply walk around the city streets and admire the old gothic architecture. See the photos below to get an idea.
One thing that I noticed and found a little disturbing was the amount of graffiti in the city.. especially on the old buildings. It would seem the youth of Prague don't care at all about their rich history.. or that they have something very special in their city. I saw scrawed on a wall 'We don't want a clean city". I thought that attitude was a real shame.
We went to a local supermarket and bought all kinds of things.
At our hostel.. Monday nights is beer tasting night! We joined the small group of beer connoisseurs for an informative evening.. and a few lagers. Our small group eventually turned into quite a large group and there was barely enough beer to go around. Once the actual beer tasting had finished though.. a bunch of us hung around and shared in a drinking game.
I remember meeting some very nice people and having a great time.. but the rest of the night is mostly a blur. I don't get drunk like that very often.. but of all the places to do so.. Prague is perhaps the most apt I think.
That was it for us in the Czeck Republic. We learnt of a train derailment somewhere between Prague and our next destination.. Nürnberg. So.. it's an early start for us in the morning. Check out the next posting to see how we get there ;D
