On our second day in Amsterdam we went to the Heineken Brewery for a tour. It cost 15 euros.. but it was definitely worth it!
The tour takes you through the old brew room.. showing how they used to make Heineken back in the day. We couldn't see the current brewing area but we were lead to a room called the "Brew U Ride" where you stand on a moving platform and watch a large screen infront of you. The movie takes you through the modern process of brewing their beer.. and it's called the Brew U Ride because they turn you into a beer (ok.. the dutch are a strange lot ;D). It's supposed to be a "4D" experience. It was ok.. but it would have been awesome with 3D glasses.
We took the Heineken Draught Challenge where we were taught how to pour a beer properly.. and I now have a certificate from Heineken to prove I can do it ;D The art of beer pouring is getting the head just right. The size of the head is very important because it helps keep the beer from going flat.. and the head should be there to the last drop!
I also got to bottle my very own Heineken.. costing 5 euros. I have a bottle now with my name and year on the label. Very cool.
After Heineken we went to see Holland's smallest brewery Brouwerij 't IJ (?). We both had the 9% Columbus. It was strong but good.. taste a bit like marmalade.
We went for a bit more of a wander around the city before heading back to the hostel for dinner. It was Tight-ass Tuesday.. spaghetti and beer for 2 euros. Pretty good actually!
Right now though.. it's Wednesday. We are travelling on one epic train ride to Paris. I will fill you in on the details in the next posting.
Be good..
