After leaving Kardamyli, we traveled into the area called the Mani. If you look at a map of Greece, it is one of the two southern most pennisulas. The people who lived here were fiece because life was hard. They had the sea but generally the towns were built higher up for protection. The landscape was dotted with old terracing where they tried to grow their crops. Some would say, all that grew was rocks. Many people again left during the 1870 and again during the civil war. They are coming back.
We stopped at a couple of churches on the way to Gythio. which is located on the west side of the pennisula. These churches have beautiful frescos but we have to understand that when the Muslims came they either plastered over them, gouged out the eyes on the images or white washed them. In the Islamic religion they do not have any human images. It is amazing how well some of these frescos have been restored.
Some families had their own little churches. I suppose that depended on the status and maybe how much money they had.
In Gythio we stayed at a hotel right on the water with a balcony. When we arrived we had an impromptu wine party to celebrate a womans 21st anniverary of her 50th birthday. What a nice surprise.
Renee and I went in search of something to eat and finally found this little place where the old man only spoke Greek. He took us back into the kitchen to show up everything they had. Lifted the lids to everything. We ended up having stuffed tomatoes, my favorite thing here, baked chicken with roasted potatoes. For dessert he brought us this big apple. What a nice man.

Great photo on top of the fortress!!
A real keeper of the two of you--so exotic, but so barren. You will be happy to see the beautiful leaves that are really coming out around here.

See you before too long, Heidi
