We awaken at 8:00 am to a cold drizzle. We can see new snow on the mountains behind the motel. Our plan had been to do the full circuit of Yellowstone today and return in the evening to Cody. Because of the miserable weather we decide to visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Centre in the morning and see what the weather is like later on.

The museum is fascinating, divided into 5 separate exhibitions, The Buffalo Bill Museum, Whitney Gallery of Western Art, Plains Indian Museum, Draper Museum of Natural History and the Cody Firearms Museum.

The Buffalo Bill Historical Center is widely regarded as America's finest Western museum. The complex was opened in 2002 and is beautifully laid out. We visit all the museums (except the firearms of course) and by mid-day are ready to roll. We decide we will drive into Yellowstone just to see the famous Old Faithful geyser, then, hoping for better weather, return tomorrow to see the rest of the park.

We continue on US Highway 16, the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway, which follows the North Fork of the Shoshone River through the scenic Wapiti Valley to the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The route is known for its natural beauty, wildlife and unusual rock formations. Six miles west of Cody the highway skirts Buffalo Bill Reservoir. We stop at a little roadside shop for lunch supplies and continue through drizzle to the park entrance.

Yellowstone, the first and oldest national park in the world, spans nearly 3,500 square miles (5,600 sq. kms) in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. The entrance fee is US$ 25.00 per car, and is valid for a week.

It has stopped raining and although still cloudy, the weather is a bit clearer. We soon start seeing animals. Large herds of bison wander down the road quite oblivious of the traffic and we also see smaller herds of elk.

We actually have to cross the Continental Divide twice to get to our destination of today. Old Faithful. By the time we arrive at Old Faithful, it has started raining again. The next eruption of the geyser is estimated at 5:35 pm.
