Where I stayed

We return on the same road to Lamia , where we plan to take the mountain road to Delphi . But I still regret having rushed past Thermopylae , so I make a small detour to return past this historic site.

The Battle of Thermopylae occurred in 480 BC. An alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian Empire at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the Persians for three days in one of history's most famous last stands. A small force of 300 Spartans and 700 Thespian volunteers led by King Leonidas I of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes I of Persia could pass. After several unsuccessful frontal assaults, the Persians eventually found a traitor to show them an alternative route and encircled the Greek forces. King Leonidas allowed the remaining Thespians to surrender, but the 300 Spartans fought to the bitter end. Their sacrifice inspired all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. This amazing feat has been portrayed rather gorily in the 2007 movie "300".

Beside the battlefield is an imposing memorial to Leonidas and the Spartans. Regrettably the motorway runs right between the memorial and the small hill where the last Spartans perished, and the plain where so many fell is now a truck stop. We partake of our picnic lunch in these piteous surroundings, and then continue high into the mountains on the winding road to Delphi . Enjoying our € 1.29 wine, the roads seem even narrower and windier.

The weather has deteriorated and we are driving through fog and drizzle, though just before entering Delphi we are rewarded by a break in the clouds, presenting a glorious sunset over the mountain peaks.

Delphi is a small town and we easily locate our hotel, the Varonos. This hotel is well located in the centre of town and walking distance from all restaurants. Only a 5 minutes stroll to the upper Delphi archaeological site. Many rooms have stunning views over the mountains towards the Gulf of Corinth . Others face the street, and can be noisy. Rooms are comfortable and reasonably sized with sparkling clean bathrooms. Outstanding breakfast buffet included. Free internet. Two lounges somewhat overly decorated, almost like museums. Very pleasant and informative owners. Street parking only.

This evening is Fernando's birthday, so we select a good restaurant and treat him to dinner at Epikouros Taverna . It is a large place, but with few patrons, so we enjoy at wonderful meal with a spectacular view. Just as we are leaving, a huge group of Italian teenage students arrive. We just made it in time! Our great dinner was € 30.00 each with wine.
