Miryam has made a date to have her toenails done before we leave Santiago de Compostela. What may take for me less than ten minutes takes Miryam 90 minutes. No doubt about it, I think men are missing a great deal by not having their toenails done.

We depart our nice flat by 10:30 and hit the road to Ribadero. It is located on the north coast of Galicia on one of the Rķas Altas, inlets from the Bay of Biscay, or Cantabrian Sea. The road, as usual, is excellent, dropping through green mountains to the coast at Viveiro. We stop at this interesting coastal town for a visit, then continue along the coast, with a picnic stop along the way.

We arrive in Ribadeo, and find our hotel quite easily. Nothing like good signposting!

The Hotel Santa Cruz is rather basic. We get a room overlooking a large concrete expanse, which is presently the parking space and will obviously one day accommodate expansion. The manager, or owner, we never knew which, is gruff. We later find she seems to spend all her day washing and ironing sheets. It's just a block from the main street, so it’s convenient, and we are only there for three nights. This is the only accommodation we didn’t book in advance, and we regret it.

The town is quite pleasant, located on the top of a hill facing the Rķa de Eo and the twin towns of Castropol  and Figueras. At the bottom of the hill is the port, with cafes and bars. All in all it’s a pleasant enough place.
