Most of our group go back to London today. Miryam decides to spend the day with Sheila. I'll stay with Byron, who suggests we visit the Brooklands Museum. I would also like to visit Guildford Cathedral, which in my younger days, I actually saw being built.

Construction of Guildford Cathedral was begun in 1935, but was held up by the Second World War. My parents and I used to drive by this imposing building on the top of this hill every time we visited London from Droxford. By this time, construction had started again and it was finally consecrated in 1961. In spite of having passed by so many times, I had never visited it, so now was my chance.

The Cathedral is indeed magnificent, but in a very simple and undecorated way. One architect described it as "Streamline Gothic".

After the Visit we continue to Brooklands Museum. I had also seen Brooklands on my trips to London from Hampshire. The train passed right by the old ruined banked motor car race course. This was a fascinating and mysterious sight for me, with memories of the great English racing cars. Brooklands was the first custom built motor racing circuit in the world, and was for some time Britain’s largest aircraft manufacturing centre.

It is now a captivating museum, with vintage race cars and aircraft, including the same Concorde Miryam, Bryan and I had flown on from London to New York in 1989.

What a good day out

There isnt many people that can say they have seen a cathedral built, nearly from start to finish

Its been a long time since I have been to Brooklands, maybe I'm due for another visit

Yes, the Brits invented car races. So many interesting things to see in the UK!
That abandoned car race track seems the Via Apia, although some centuries
are between them. Amazing!
