Returning to Karen and Ed's home today, we take time to visit the whaling museum in New Bedford. This town is famous as the one-time whaling capital and probably the richest town in America. Last year we had driven through the city, but had missed the outstanding historical district and merely seen a decaying industrial town.

It was from New Bedford that Herman Melville sailed on the whaler "Acushnet" to gain the experience to write his classic novel “Moby Dick”. The museum is really fascinating, and we spend much more time there than we should have.

Afterwards we stroll through the historic city centre and the waterfront district. We are happy that we have returned and seen the restored city centre. The weather is not cooperating now and the skies are darkening, notwithstanding, we are glad we have included this intriguing visit to a city that represents such a significant era of US history.
