our 2nd attempt at Amberg was a success!! last time storms ran us off. we had a great day...clear skies!
Amberg is an ancient walled city with double fortification that sits in foothills of the Franconian Jura Mountains and the Bavarian Forest. the Vils River runs through the middle of the city. in 1034 it was a court town with considerable trade in iron and tinplate and industry from from the 14th to the 16th centuries. it was also the capital of the Upper Panatinate until 1810. at that time it was considered one of the strongest fortified towns in medieval Germany. in 1796 the Austrians defeated the French here leaving prominate buildings still standing: town hall, the ducal castle and the electoral palace (see pics)
