Later that evening, we carried our sore bodies, now much lighter without the weight of the packs, up the hill to Havasu Falls, the destination of campers young and old alike. At first we watched - young kids sitting along the edge of a ridge over which water from the falls flowed into the stream that runs alongside the campground, an older couple walking along the shallow bottom of the water to the other side, a boy photographing his father as he climbed the rock wall behind the crashing water.
We were awed not only by the magnitude of the waterfall itself, but by its backdrop. The white water crashed into a vibrant blue pool, all set in front of rich red rocks covered in thick green moss reaching up to a bubble gum blue sky.
Climbing into the shallow water, which was as clear as a swimming pool, you feel small in comparison to the towering falls. At one point the next day, Michelle attempted to swim to the falls, struggling against the current and the mist. After the swim, she felt exhausted, her body weathered from fighting the water.
We swam in the falls, but we also relaxed by the edge, leaning against rocks and allowing the mist from the water to bring down our body temperature, like nature's air conditioner. This, we discovered, is the place to be at the hottest part of the day. Couples and children were strewn about, relaxing on air mattresses and towels, throwing sticks for the local dogs who would adopt anyone as owner.
From above the falls, we stopped to take a few photographs, balancing the camera precariously on rocks amid cactus plants. Michelle would position Andrew in front of the falls, balance the camera, set the timer, and run quickly to where Andrew was, all the time trying not to get stuck by a cactus, which she painfully discovered later have barbed needles.
Hawasu Falls, we discovered, is a place of both beauty and power.
