Leaving San Francisco and driving down Pacific Highway 1 to Los Angeles ticks another box for us. The highway is famous for running along some of the most beautiful coastlines in the USA, leading to its designation as an All-American Road. We identified several way points, the first being Ano Nuevo State Park. This state park is home to a large colony of Northern Elephant Seals which come ashore to give birth and mate from mid-December through March - a very recent head count numbered the Elephant Seals at well over 1500. A volunteer guide provided a really interesting history of the park, and an insight to the living, feeding and breeding habits of these giant slugs. Calling them slugs is not really an accurate description when you know they can move on land faster than humans despite weighing up to 5000lbs.
