Gales, heavy rain, bridges down, roads closed, time to scarper inland and baton the hatches down. We found refuge in Invercargill, not the most salubrious town, but plenty adequate to take cover for the night. We stayed at a very pleasant town campervan site, and even though our campervan leaked, we were plenty safe compared to many others trampers trapped on walks or by flooding.

We picked our way up to Te Anu stopping at many sea, river or lakeside views on the way. On arrival at Te Anu, the information centre confirmed the road to Milford Sound was closed, but hopefully it would re-open tomorrow.  We took at bit of a gamble and purchased tickets for the Milford Sound Nature Cruise and as the road was closed near to the sound entrance, we headed an hour up the road to Lake Gun DOC site. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains even M went to bed in his fleece.
