First impressions of North Island

Our early start due to the long drive north did not happen and after a lot of faffing, we eventually got underway about 2pm. The drive up was pretty unspectacular until we got as far north the R…. River around Hunterville. The density of people and habitation was instantly noticeable in North Island and a real contrast to the South - first impressions were not good, Gloucester springs to mind. On a more positive note, we have eaten over 400km of our 1500 km journey on day one, so we can relax and enjoy the remainder at a more leisurely pace. We went to a campsite in T with full facilities but decided the freedom site about 7kms away held more attraction despite another cold water shower. It is great news to have left the sandflys behind but we were not overly rejoicing at the dense cloud of mozzies that join us at dusk.
