Where I stayed
I leave for Chang-Mai next Thursday (5/9) for the Songkran festival. I was told Chang-Mai is the anti-Bangkok and it is the place to go for a good cup of coffee. A twelve-hour train ride was hardly inspired by a simple cup of joe, but it helps. A lot of students are going and it looks like it should be an eventful trip. Songkran celebrates the Thai New Year, Buddha statues are paraded through the streets and locals dowse foreigners (and other locals) with water. Water guns went on sale about two weeks ago and trains have been booked since February. The water tossing is a practice of cleansing the statues and people alike
I leave for Bangkok Thursday afternoon, catch the train at 7:30 arrive in Chang-Mai the following morning then leave for Bangkok again Monday night and arrive Tuesday morning. From there the rest of my week is an open book, a few people are going further south to visit the islands again, some are hanging around Bangkok and there's talk of attending the Olympic Torch passing through Bangkok for a good wholesome protest.
School is both winding up and winding down; assignments are due, but not for what seems like awhile. Upon the completion of Songkran I have four weeks remaining, one of which includes a weekend trip to Singapore. Ever since Non-Western World Studies with Mr. Lindeman my junior year I have had a sort of fantasy idea of getting to actually visit Singapore. He spent nine years in Singapore and had more than a few stories to share, he used to say, "if you ever get a chance, you gotta see Singapore." I figured it was a nice thought, but didn't see myself putting action to it any time soon. Then here I am three years down the road ticket in hand.
I've spent a lot of time reading and hanging out with the gang of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," (a TV show you should probably avoid if you are easily offended) but I am venturing into the sun more and more. My stockpile of Water Babies SPF 50 is diminishing and my tolerance for spicy food is definitely more to increasing.
We lost power again, so goodbye before my battery cuts me off.
