Hey there. So, I realized after reading my last entry that I didn't quite capture the big picture of what I'm doing, so here's a quick rundown for those of you who don't know: I'm spending the Fall 2010 semester abroad in a small town in The Netherlands called Well. My visa allows me to be in the European Union for 90 days, during which time I will be exploring and visiting anywhere and everywhere in Europe that I can (I already have arrangements to visit Scotland and Sweden, but more on that later). There are no Friday classes, so I have around 13 three-day weekends, plus a week with no classes, to travel. When I’m not traveling, I’ll be living in Emerson’s Netherlands campus, Kasteel Well, which is a 14th century Castle converted into a dormitory by Emerson in 80s. I have a handful of pictures of the Castle’s exterior, but I plan on doing a full video tour for you all soon.

Now, onto Castle life. First and foremost, the campus is owned exclusively by Emerson, so all staff members and students are Emerson employees and students, respectively. There is around 85 of us here, and it seems everyone is becoming friends quite quickly. All of the staff members speak English remarkably well, and have been excelling at making us feel at home in what is the most unfamiliar home many of us have had to date.

The town of Well has around 3,000 residents, and of those that I’ve met, they couldn’t be friendlier. I haven’t explored much of the town, save for the pub, which has beer that puts all American beer to shame. I’ll give another update with pictures on the town of Well.

I had my first day of classes today. Sitting through three classes for two hours each was kind of rough after four months of summer, but I’m ready to get back into the swing. I’m taking the Sophomore Honors Seminar, History of Art: Post-WW2, Film Criticism, and the class I’m most excited for, Writing the Feature Film. I’ll tell you more about classes once they really get going.

As of right now, I’m excited for our first group trip to Amsterdam this coming weekend. It will be the first time we’re left to our own devices in a foreign city, and I know it will be exhilarating experience. I suppose that’s all for now. I’m not sure if I’ll update before Amsterdam, but if not, expect plenty of pictures and stories. Tot ziens.
