A one week trip was just what D'Lynn's parents signed up for as they met us in the Beijing International airport for a 6-day whirl-wind adventure. We set up the logistics of the trip (ensuring that we wouldn't be forced onto a standing-room only train) met the folks at the airport and were on a plane to Xi'an 2 hours after they touched down in Beijing (direct from L.A.).
Basically the must see's in Xi'an are the Terracotta Warriors, the Wild Goose Pagoda and the less famous Muslim quarter and adjoining markets. The Muslim quarter is a great place to get a $1 meal... and the markets next door may be the best that we'd seen so far in China, as far as a one-stop shop for all of your Chinese souvenir and knock-off needs.
Pingyao is a city that you cannot have any plans for. The "sights" aren't that great although you'll be able to see all of your Taoist, Confucius and Buddhist temples here. The true allure of Pingyao is simply walking around and observing the coal soaked, old, relaxed city. We took hours simply walking around the city atop the old walls... we strolled the streets and even got a massage.
For us, it seemed like a week of luxury as we were treated to $32 / night hotel rooms (rather than the $10 / night rooms we were used to) and great food. Thanks mom and dad (Diane and Mick), we had so much fun!
