Back to reality. After a few months of fairly dirty, small and/or old cities, we went back to a big city. A big city is a big city is a big city. There are a few exceptions... Rome, Prague, Rio, Paris, New York, San Francisco, London... they have a unique character about them that truly sets them apart. With the exception of the former, if an alien came to earth and visited 200 big cities, this being would probably have an extreme case of deja vu. Shanghai is just another big city... don't get us wrong, this doesn't mean it is a bad city. We put L.A. and San Diego - which we both LOVE - in the "another big city" category. These "big cities" are just not THAT original. However, after traveling around India, Tibet and inland China for a while, the conveniences, dependability and structure of Shanghai was priceless.

We spent our time meandering around The Bund, New Pudong region, the old city, the markets and a museum. We also "cashed in" a few more of Myles' depleting Marriott points (Shanghai hotels are expensive) and stayed at the Marriott Renaissance in New Pudong. It, again, was extremely nice and we took full advantage of the facilities to say the least.

The other huge key to Shanghai is that we have a friend there. Myles met Jade while in Stuttgart, Germany during the beginning of the trip. They exchanged email addresses and did the'ol "Feel free to call me if you happen to be in Shanghai" thing. Little did Jade know... if you tell us to look you up, we do it! A few months later, we were touring Shanghai with her! It was very cool spending a few days with Jade as it was the first Chinese friend we had been with consistently for more than a day. Thanks Jade!
