I've only got six days until I ship out for my new life as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic, and I'm pumped. With only a few loose ends to tie up I'm starting to realize that I am actually doing this. Luckily, I've had help along the way from Lauren, who is also from Athens, and will be training with me in Santo Domingo. We met through an online chat group created for our training class. I feel this is an the opportune time to say that it truly is a small world. It's been really nice having somebody to call up and barrage with questions and to share our general excitement about the upcoming adventure. I had no clue if she was going to be some lame excuse for a human being, or pretty damn cool - she fell under the pretty damn cool category.

My friends threw a great going away party for me last Saturday in Athens (even the noise violation was pretty damn funny, sorry Lindsey). My old friend Qasim drove down from Virginia just for the occasion - you get the MVP for the night. I was able to see friends I hadn't seen in while and leave Athens with a bang. Although I must say, none of us were able to function the next day.

I leave for my two day staging event in Miami on Feb. 14. While there, I'll meet my training class, get my papers, and sit through a few meetings. No problem. On the 16th we all fly out to Santo Domingo, the capitol, where I'll spend the next three months. I'll live with a host family while I learn the language, culture, and receive my technical training in agroforestry. The line I've been getting from the Peace Corps is that I'll be working to achieve sustainable agriculture through reforestation and crop management. I'm guessing I'll have a few projects on the side, hopefully, they involve the beach.
