Our train arrived in Rome at 9:30 pm. The train station was a place swirling with activity – full of visitors and locals rushing to their destinations. No doubt, many of the visitors arrived for Pope John Paul II's beatification, the next day. We heard many different languages. Oddly enough, English was not heard.

We found a taxi driver who was willing to take us to our bed and breakfast. As he drove (like a typical taxi driver) through the streets of Rome, we were a little apprehensive, reading too much information about dishonest taxi drivers. We arrived at our destination safe and sound and we were very relieved in finding that he was a nice taxi driver in the end.

Maribell Bed & Breakfast is a lovely, newly renovated bed and breakfast just a 15 to 20 minute walk to St. Peter’s. The bed and breakfast which is on the first floor (up one flight) consists of just two rooms with an area where a simple breakfast is served every morning. Marina is the lovely young woman who runs the bed and breakfast. The bed and breakfast is actually also her home so she is right there on the premises. Her English is very good. She was very helpful with all our questions and her cappuccino and hot chocolate were both delicious and a great start to a busy day. We chose the room with an en suite bathroom. The room is nice with a comfortable bed, TV (mainly Italian channels), a mini fridge, air-conditioning, and nice big windows over-looking the street. The bathroom is also nice though the shower is small but I think that is typical of most European accommodations. Also, there is an elevator which is very convenient when you have lots of bags to carry even if it’s just up one flight of steps. After ironing all my clothes, checking my emails and letting everyone at home know that we arrived safely in Rome, we settled in and took a much needed rest from the long day of traveling. We were going to need it – the next day was Pope John II’s beatification!
