July 18: Meet Ronie(our driver for the weekend)although we called him Tony the whole time... at the airport...the parents arrive and we're off to Monteverde. I think they were a little surprised that we put them through a 4 hour bus ride right off the plane...esp. seeing as it was already 10pm. But we stopped and got some beer, which made the steep, switchback, rocky roads not seem so bad!

July 19: Wake up at 5:30 with only a few hours of sleep, and head to the cloud forest for a canopy tour. We got our own guided tour seeing as we were the only people crazy enough to go in this weather(rainy, windy, cold). Estefan and Peter(our guides) assured us that although the view isn't gonna be that great b/c of all the clouds.....the zip lines go faster when they're wet. He was right...it was really amazing! After climbing about 90 spiral stairs, you can't see your hand in front of your face, let alone where you're headed at 70 km an hour. There were a total of 11 zip lines and our guides touted they had the longest, highest and fastest in all of Costa Rica(don't know if that's true, but made us feel better about the $160 we spent on it) After a few cups of hot coffee to defrost a little bit, we went back for showers and headed to a butterfly garden. Not really something we would normally do, but we're in the rainforest...so def. the place to experience it. And we weren't disappointed...the butterflies were nice, don't get me wrong, but the real source of entertainment was our guide. She had huge dreads and this crazy inflection in her voice that she employed every time she talked about butterfly coitus. Then, at the end of the tour, we were introduced to a colony of leaf cutter ants, which is when she informed us that this species really doesn't need the male and illustrated the fact by placing her hand over the male ant on the huge illustration board for the rest of her speil about the "queen" ant. We held all our laughter in so as not to embarrass anyone....which made for an entertaining taxi ride back the hotel. Then, on to dinner at Johnny's which was really nice...parents head home for bed and Chant and I visit a couple of the local "clubs", so to speak, which is where we both learned to Salsa.

July 20: Toni tries to wake us up at 7 am...did we mention the bar owner gave us a complementary bottle of tequila last night...I'm just glad the walls were thin enough to talk to her without disrupting my brain with vertical movement. Finally get up in time to eat part of a breakfast that would end up haunting us later...and back in the van with Ronie. About halfway into the trip, Ronie starts to swerv a bit, which is when we realize that Chant has fallen asleep in the front...a little exposed ;) After Toni covers her up...his driving improved immensely. Back to San Jose where the parents are ready to have a beer, the thought of which iniates a violent gag reaction in our world( maybe a little to literally in Kiley's). But they're only in town for the weekend, so we got back in the game. Long story short...ended up at the Colonial Casino around 6pm toasted and ready to spend some money. The Roulette table was good to all of us...and Chant and I made enough money to pay for our trip to Cuba next week.

Will write more later.........
