Everything went smoothly from Bloomington to St. Louis; Mom got a little bit of a later start than expected and got to my place around 2:30 and then we left around 3. I had to laugh because the cats got to take a little break from their crates at my apartment and they had no problem running around and exploring things right away. The van is literally stuffed to the brim and we ended up shoving things wherever we could find an extra pocket of space. It doesn't help that we had to include all the extras for the cat - litter box, food, crates. This is when traveling with a dog would be so much more convenient.

Although we probably could have gone a little further, we stopped in St. Louis tonight. My brother and grandmother both live here and so we thought it would be nice to stop and see them (even though my brother will be joining us in AZ on the 23rd). Tonight we had dinner with Ben at a place called Scottish Arms (http://www.thescottisharms.com/) and it was SO GOOD. I honestly wasn't too excited about having Scottish food but everything, from the drinks to the dessert, was delicious. My personal choice was a zinfandel (I'm drawn to them, I can't explain why), the smoked salmon appetizer (personal weakness, if it's on the menu, there's no question), the bangers and mash (should have stopped here...), and the mixed berry cobbler (again, a personal weakness - the fact that there's fruit in it makes it seem marginally healthier).  My brother is one of the funniest people I've ever met so there was endless entertainment and it was just fun to catch up in general.

Tonight we're at a hotel in Forest Park (one that accepts cats...I typed that out in a text to a friend and realized that "accepts" was probably not the best word choice, but I thought I should go along with what I had already typed and so I said "accepts cats...as payment" and it caused a lot of confusion/laughter) and we'll be getting up early for breakfast with my brother and grandmom around 8 so we can get an early start. I really want to make it to Phoenix by Monday night but we would have to do two 12-hour days so I'm not sure that's what will end up happening. We'll see! We better see lots of different state license plates tomorrow...one day in, 13 states down.

Now: time for bed. Tomorrow: obviously there'll be a recap of breakfast (how could I pass up an unprofessional food review?) and I'll try to recount the witty banter between my mom and I once we arrive in some random western town for the night. Random note: cats are fun subjects on photo booth. Since they'll probably be half of the entertainment on this trip, meet King (all black) and Leonard Washington.
