******** Hey all, I am not allowed to collect donations on behalf of another organization through PayPal, but you can donate to "my travels" at the top right of this page, and I will donate the equivalent of all proceeds out of my money to the Youth Network********

Thank you so much for your understanding and support!

Hello everyone, this is the blog you have all been waiting for (the one where I risk losing my few readers as it is)... the one where I get down on my virtual hands and knees to beg!!! The 2011 Youth Empowerment Network needs your help!!!

As I mentioned in my previous blog (which I only posted a few hours ago.... sorry for this everyone, I have a backlog of information to share and not enough time to share it) I have been extremely busy over the course of the last few days helping to kick off the first of many fund raising events to help support the Red Thread Literacy Program, Youth Empowerment Network and the 2011 Summer Camp that we are very much hoping to hold this August.  Over the course of the weekend, and many hours leading up to it, Red Thread members and volunteers worked hard to put on a Movie weekend to earn a meager $120 over the course of the last three days (a very small sum, but a sum much bigger than I was expecting none the less). We achieved this through ticket sales, vending popcorn and juice, and through the kind donations of community members.  This is not to say that we also had a meager turnout, the response from the community was actually quite overwhelming, but I mention the $120 figure to highlight the expendable income and resources available within the community to financially support such a cause.

Because of the costly nature of the camp, we are exhausting all opportunities to help raise money for this grassroots initiative.  The basic idea is that youth are the leaders of tomorrow, and especially in the case of vulnerable and impoverished youth, they are in need of guidance on how to ensure a brighter future for themselves and their communities. To get an idea of the work the Youth Empowerment Network and Literacy program have been doing and why this work is important, please see the short PowerPoint presentation below (click on the picture and a pausable video will begin).

How can you help you ask?

We direly need to raise US $5000 before July 31st to host the 2011 Youth Empowerment Camp for 35-40 youths and it is up to us, the volunteers to help make that happen!

Your support can make a big difference in these children’s lives. Beyond the long term impact of the camp and the Literacy and Empowerment work Red Thread does, imagine growing up in an environment where you barely have the basic necessities for life, not mention someone to take you out on the weekends for ice cream, play some games with you or get a little individualized time and affection. The youth Empowerment Camp strives as much to get these kids heading in the right direction, as it does to give them a better quality of life and something to look forward to.

If you are looking for a way to get your valuable donations directly to people who really and truly need them, you need look no further. Proceeds from our fundraiser will be covering the program costs, without a cent going toward the bureaucratic process or into pockets of camp facilitators (because we are all volunteers!!!). If you would like to assist with our initiatives, you can get involved in the following ways:
  • Carry a Youth Network and Literacy Plan Fund Raising Envelope to your workplace and see how much you can raise (email me and I will get you one!!!!)!
  • If you are a Canadian, you can make a cash donation through an email money transfer to my email address "mishkabobala@hotmail.com" (Michelle Bobala) or if you are outside of Canada and/or credit card makes more sense for you, you can donate through PayPal by using the link at the top of this page above my profile picture entitled "Support My Travels, Make a donation"... Don't worry, not a cent is going to be used for my personal travel use as the site would have you believe... unfortunately TravelPod will not allow me set up a proper fund-raising widget for the edge of my blog, so I am stuck with their generic and very misleading one although the money is all going to the same place.... directly to the Youth Empowerment Network. And remember, every little tiny bit helps.  If you can't afford a lot, even a donation of $2 to $5 will help us achieve our goal little by little.
  • Make an in kind donation * For an e-list of in kind donations, please contact me at mishkabobala@hotmail.com. Members of the Guyanese diaspora in Canada can make sure your donations reach us in Guyana.
  • Visit Guyana and volunteer to be a camp facilitator this August, or volunteer your time with the Literacy Program!
Because I myself am very skeptical of making donations to NGO's for fear of only a very small proportion of them actually getting to where they belong, I would like to make the donation process as transparent as possible and I will be posting regular updates regarding our progress and where the funding is going. If you send me an email money transfer donation, I will send you back a reciept of funds email and a mini progress report. If you have any queries please send them to my email address (mishkabobala@hotmail.com).

Kind regards to you all for taking the time to read about the initiative I am so priviliged to currently be a part of, and to those of you who are planning or willing to donate in any way you can, the children and  the Youth Network and Literacy Program Volunteers thank you from the very bottom of our hearts.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all.

Michelle

Aby sa ten letni tabor aj dokonal, tak my dobrovolnici, ho musime naplanovat, predviezt aj zohnat US$5000 aby sme mohli zaplatit ubytovanie, jedlo a materialy na programy pre 35-40 deti.  My ktori ho budeme predvazat, ne budeme vobec plateni, ci ze kazdy centik ktory zarobime poide direktne k detom. Minuli vikend sme mali "film festival" kde sme ukazovali filmi v pivnici Red Thread a predavali listky a popcorn aby sme mohli zacat na tabor setrit.

Cmuk!
Michelle
