I'm going to leave for the airport in about an hour, so I figured I'd make my first blog entry now. My mom and I have been staying in a lovely little apartment in Cambridge for the last few days, poking around the area and Boston and getting ready for my big trip! I think I finally have everything packed, and have been collecting advice from all sorts of people I've met recently. It seems like every third person has been to Peru! Anyway, it's good because I have a 24 hour layover in Lima from 4am-4am.
I get in tomorrow, and I'll have to find some stuff to do before crashing with another woman from my program at the Hotel Manhattan in the evening. I've been told that the historic district, and especially the Plaza de Armas is nice, so I'll probably hang out there, do a little sightseeing and scope out some good coffee shops. I hope they have good coffee shops... Anyway, it will definitely be an adventure, because I only hailed my first cab yesterday! Apparently in Lima the prudent thing to do is to negotiate the fare before even getting into the cab, and only taking cabs from the official cab stands. I hope my spanish is up to the task! I've gotten a little rusty this semester. I think I'll look for a pocket dictionary to buy at the airport.
I've had such a time packing because I can only take 33lbs there, and 22lbs back, with an 11lb carryon each way. I'm sure I'll get sick of the few clothes I'm bringing. I just don't know what to expect at all!
Anyhow, I really hope to keep in touch with you all! Perhaps I'll even find an internet cafe in Lima tomorrow, but if not, there will definitely be an update a little later in the week.
Luck and love to all,
P.S. I'm thinking of going by Clara while in Peru... what do you think? Mira means look, and Miranda means looking, and can you just imagine if you met someone from another country named "Looking" ? Just awful. And my middle name is Clare, so you know... we'll see. Adios!
