I was invited to spend the weekend in Kandy with some of the Canadians working in Colombo. The director of the organization I'm working through has a cottage up there. Admittedly it's a bit of a nuisance for me to get there - 5 hours to Colombo (though only 160 kms), 3 hours to Kandy and then another hour of steep, windy, rocky, rutty road.

300 kms in latitude and 700 meters in altitude later, we arrived safe and sound. (Had we done the last leg of the drive in daylight, we may have been not so 'sound': in the dark we didn't realize our vehicle traveling at warp speeds feet away from a steep cliff!)

The house once belonged to a tea estate and this "two star hotel" (the water is heated via solar panel but there is no electricity) was where the estate's second in command lived. It was kind of surreal to walk around and imagining who would have done so nearly a century ago...

The next morning, I snuck out to watch the sunrise. Having arrived at night, it was my first glimpse of the valley below. It was quite the view! Several paddy fields, temples and houses could be seen way down below. I quite enjoyed going for hikes and I the cool evenings (too cool for mosquitos)!
