INDECOS has a celebration every January 1st with its staff and board members. This put a decisive kink in my habitual New Years Eve celebration, but my vacation was drawing to an end and I missed my girls (plus habits are bad)! So I made my way back to Matara on Dec 31st.

January 1st, Nilu and Pati wished me a happy new year by offering me kiri bath, sambol and cake. Kiri bath is cooked rice + coconut milk. When it cools it kinda solidifies and is cut into diamond shaped pieces. It is made on auspicious and special days. Sambol is a side dish made with coconut, and chilies. It's made (and eaten) anytime (breakfast, lunch, dinner and anywhere in between).

Nilu helped me get into my sari (which takes about 45 minutes) and I was off to work earlier than I would normally go to bed on New Years day.

This INDECOS celebration turned out to be 4 hours of speeches - again in Sinhalese. Argh. I never thought it would be so exhausting to sit somewhere and do nothing for 4 hours. Especially when its 35 degrees and I'm draped in a glamorous toga... The seconds spent waiting for the fan to oscillate toward me again felt like an eternity!

Well, I survived the four hours by practicing/memorizing Sinhalese verbs and sneaking off to the kitchen with my girls a couple times. Like little mice, we nibbled on the treats that were to be served after the speeches were done - more kiri bath and yummy sweets made with cashews, cardamom and fresh cinnamon - yum.

I wish all of you peace and happiness in 2007!
