The Great Ocean Road

08/11/2011 After 7 days in Melbourne with lots of trams, eating, drinking as you would expect with city life, we hired a car to explore the Great Ocean Road for two days. The weather was gorgeous as we would say 'cracking the flags'. We booked an economy Hyundai Getz but ended up with a rather large, posh Mitsubishi Lancer automatic - score! We headed straight out of Melbourne on the M1 towards Geelong, first stop was Torquay a beach town famous for surfing and the beginning of The Great Ocean Road. We had a very nice breakfast/lunch and then headed to the beach, had a dip in the sea, a little rest and then onwards. The journey went along the coast seeing lots of beautiful beach scenes. Next stop for us was Split lighthouse, the lighthouse was where they filmed 'Round the Twist' and blast from the past kids programme. Here the road leads you past some posh houses and one with a long hallway and room jutting out the cliff, which is where the owner built their bedroom miles away from the rest of the house to get away from the kids. After a few very winding roads we made it to the 12 Apostles around 7pm. This area of coast is famous for crazy rock formations and shipwreck stories, as boats from England would pass under Africa towards Australia, but the wind was that strong they were unable to stop and a lot would crash into the shore. We caught the twelve apostles at sunset, we took pictures from the viewing point then made it down to the beach. The views were amazing, I was really impressed and a little speechless.

Next day we were up early and repeated the journey back to Melbourne, seeing the lovely sights but the other way round. We stopped for lunch in Lorne and spent a few hours again on the beach, had a read of my book and dip in the sea. Dropped the car back at the depot, and after being so careful with it crashed it into the curb as I pulled it into the carpark, everybody looking. Thankfully it made more noise than damage so fingers crossed will get full deposit back. Changed hostels in Melbourne to spend a further 5 days then off to Canberra. Hostel is good, have fridge and tv in our room , with fox sport so Roscoe will be happy.
