After leaving Rio at the end of the weekend, we headed for Ilha Grande, one of the most stunning islands on the Costa Verde to the west of Rio... Or rather, itīs one of the most stunning places when the sun is shining, which unfortunately it didnīt a huge amount while we were there !!

All started well, arriving to lovely Sunday afternoon sunshine and having a great first afternoon and evening at a bar on the beach, although my evening was cut a bit short after a few too many Caiparinhias... two actually (being a bit of a lightweight)!

After that day it didnīt quite go according to plan weatherwise as we had lots of cloud and quite a bit of rain... That combined with hangovers and colds gained due to dodgy weather dampened things a bit.

We stuck at it though and went for a lovely walk across the island (which had no roads or cars) to one of the most stunning beaches in Brazil. The only downside was that it was so cold and cloudy we could only sit on the beach for about 10 minutes before having to take shelter in the trees off the beach to try and keep warm (I kid you not)! We could see that the colour of the sand and the sea were amazing, but probably didnīt even get to see it at 10% of its best (I didnīt even bother taking any photoīs!).

Sadly, sodīs law also then proceeded to work in full effect because on our journey the following day to Sao Paulo the sun came out, so we spent all day driving past glorious beaches in the blazing sunshine ! Hey ho, thatīs travelling I guess, sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesnīt - OK for Herdy and I but really not the best consolation for poor Elio who was on holiday for two weeks...

Sao Paulo was interesting, we stayed in a relatively cool area which made walking around safe and easy. Its a place Iīd learnt loads about through my Geography studies way back when, so I was interested to see it and suss out how it compared to the image weīd developed through that. I guess in reality, it seems to be doing really well - the poverty here was not that apparent around the central area of the city, similar to Rio really where we saw no more homeless people than youīd find around London - apparently thatīs very different to when Herdyīs been in Brazil before. Its obviously difficult to tell whether thatīs because of a no tolerance style policing policy or increased wealth... hopefully thereīs at least an element of the latter.
