We spent 5 nights in and around Santiago, which has to be my favourite city so far. The whole atmosphere of the place is incredibly friendly and it felt like a bit of a culture shock to arrive here after being in Bolivia, one of the poorest countries in South America.
It genuinely felt like we were in a European city in Spain or Portugal (unfortunately for us also reflected in the price of everything!). It has stunning buildings, loads of great shopping, good museums ... I guess the only difference is that people are generally more open and friendly than Europe is sometimes. The area our hotel was in is absolutely stunning, little tree-lined, cobbled streets - we even have to fight our way though at least 3 or 4 romantic couples all sitting on the benches outside to get to its front door ?!
As well as doing the normal sightseeing stuff, we also had a cracking Friday night out with Caz, SimonaŽs sister (Sim was laid up with the cold IŽd fairly inconsiderately passed on to her). One highlight I should share is that we found out that cartons of Chilean wine really are lovely (though slightly disconcerting to have wine coming out of a juice carton!)... even better when you can buy 1.5 litres of a lovely Merlot for only 1.50 !
