Visiting the Amazon jungle was definitely one of the things I was most looking forward to about coming to South America... Although thereŽs Amazon rainforest through Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia as well as Brazil, weŽd decided to hold out til Bolivia to make our visit, which the Kiwi and Aussie boys also joined us for.

We caught a plane to a town called Rurrenabaque from Le Paz (on an airline strangely run by the Bolivian military!?), which made the whole thing significantly easier than the alternative 17 hour bus journey via uncovered roads...

The main attraction was a 5 day tour, during which we had three days in the Pampas and two in the jungle. Both parts of the tour were really good, but personally I preferred the pampas where there was an amazing amount of wildlife - absolutely hundreds of alligators, loads of birds (we saw a Tucan, kingfishers, herons plus loads of others), monkeys, pink river dolphins (which we were lucky enough to go swimming with in the river - avoiding the alligators)... Not to mention the fact that during the regular game of footie which takes place between the local guides and a few tourists from camps up and down the river, we won all but one of our games (though winner stays on in that heat was a bit of a nightmare, as was playing in my reefs) !! The jungle was really interesting too, but it was too dense to see much wildlife and (unsurprisingly), I was also bitten to death(ish) by a whole range of nice flying insects which became a bit itchy.

Our flight back was in a 12 seater plane which was amazing. To fly from jungle, through the Andes then over into Le Paz (its in a massive crater right next to the Andes) was stunning and without doubt the most spectacular flight IŽve been on. The only downside was the fact that Herdy and I were sat literally behind the pilots and being able to see alarm lights pinging on intermitantly wasnŽt great for my nerves !!
