Day 27 - Haridwar & Rishikesh

Haridwar means 'God's Gate'.

We left at 6:30am and reached a small temple in Haridwar close to the river Ganga. All 14 of us performed the Pooja for my grandmother (Baa) together according to the instructions of a priest and later Her ashes were carefully placed in the Ganga. It was a very emotional few hours for everyone.
It is said that bathing in the Ganga washes away all your impurities....we all dipped in the water as per the ritual.

The next stop was a Mansa Devi (Goddess) temple which had been built in the hills of Haridwar.....we travelled to the temple by cable car (which was quite fun!). The temple was actually small encloves which each encased a different statue of the Hindu Gods and Godesses. I have to be honest and say I did not enjoy the experience of going there. There were hoards of people and flower/trinket sellers were constantly in my face trying to sell things. I don't think I even had 30 seconds to pray properly due to the sheer number of people there. I feel sad that such a pretty religious place has been ruined by the prospect of a business opportunity. I was relieved to get the cable car back towards the coach.

Lunch was a quick bite in a small restaurant in Rishikesh where all 14 of us shared Dosa's (savoury pancake with a potato filing...classically a South Indian dish) with a coconut dip....they were delicious!

We then headed to Rishikesh (1hr coach trip from Haridwar) where we took a boat across the to a beautiful temple on the banks of of the Ganga. This temple had the most serene atmosphere and we carefully placed candles in the water for Baa. We did the Ganga Aarti (prayer) together. It was wonderful :)
