I'm finding it a little hard to believe that in 9 hours I will be sitting on a plane at the start of a 24 hour trip home. I've been based in Calgary for approximately 5 months and have found the experience to be very interesting, with plenty of highs and lows along the way.
Working as a technical writer at an engineering firm has given me some ideas for my career direction, and I have met plenty of people that I hope to stay in touch with.
I have also enjoyed being able to travel around Canada and see a lot of what it has to offer - mountains, forests, wheat fields, ranches, small towns and big cities. I also really enjoyed my trip to San Francisco and wish that I could've spent more time exploring the US. There will definitely have to be another trip planned at some point in the future!
The weather is changing here and winter is approaching, which makes me wonder how I would've survived it if I had chosen to stay. Without a car, it's not easy to get around in Calgary, and the idea of standing around waiting for a bus at -30 degrees doesn't have a lot of appeal. I presume at some point the banks would have started being a bit nicer to me and let me have a credit card or loan, so perhaps I could've purchased a car, though it hardly seems worth it on a 2-year visa.
I am glad I am heading back into an Australian summer - there's not a lot of difference between a Canadian summer and an Australian winter, so I'm ready for some proper warm weather. I am looking forward to being back with friends and family (and having my car back!).
