We left St Neots after 2 weeks of frantic preparation, organising and cleaning the van and drove to Canterbury where we camped overnight…..it was freezing, snow was still on the ground and we had the heater going all night…..so early next morning we set off for Dover a little worse for wear.

The crossing went well and in no time we were off and into France heading for Caen. It was still very cold and needing a hot shower and a warm bed we opted out of camping….Colin managed to convey in the garage we needed a cheap hotel and after lots of signs and drawings we managed to find a local Formula 1 which we found delightful though it was very, very basic….who cares it was warm!

The next day we headed for Bayeux to see the tapestry and wander around the old cobbled town. Both well worth a visit….the tapestry is around 900 years old and tells the story of 1066. Then off to the Normandy beaches. Tonight it was back to camping and staying in budget. Found a little campsite near Le Mont St Michel, got up early for a visit to this amazing walled town with an abbey on top surrounded by water or sand depending on tides. As we arrived it was shrouded in mist and we could just see a spire but it steadily cleared and after being charged a tenner for parking….outrageous…we wandered up the tiny streets and explored. After a sunny morning we travelled through rain, snow blizzards and back to sun, a long drive but the weather was feeling a little warmer only 3 layers of clothing now.

The campsite in Pons (near La Rochelle) had a bar and restaurant and even more amazing it was open….fatal, we had washing to do so straight in the bar for a bottle of local wine while it washes and dries and what is the point of going back to a cold camper? we had a nice 3 course dinner…..mine was a whole camembert melted in a pot with chips and salad….haute cuisine!!

Next day we were near Bordeaux and set off for some Roman ruins….the sat nav decided the back route was the way to go….lots of tiny narrow single lanes through miles and miles of vines and chateaus, beautiful but a bit scary. Mosaics were great, 11th century church was pretty the sky was blue and the sun was shining…..what more could you want.

Biarritz was our next stop AND today we sat outside the van in only a t shirt….heaven. Spent time at the Grand pleage (beach), walking along the cliffs and watching the surfers. Tomorrow we are crossing the border into Spain through the Pyrenees. We found France expensive….is that France or is it us?
