After our return from Devon and Cornwall we had a down day most of yesterday. I was exhausted after so much driving and Nancy is sporting a headcold that I may be catching. I'm sitting quietly downstairs with everyone still in bed writing you all about our fun event at the village hall last night.

My sister, Andrea, has been involved in saving the village shop and post office for the past three years. It has required huge organizational effort and ongoing fundraising to buy the land and build the shop in a new location. Last night's Hat Show was one of the few remaining fundraisers before ground is broken for the new building sometime this month.

Vivien Sherriff, a local milliner with international renown ( www.viviensheriff.co.uk ), put on a hat show to a full house--80 women and----------Terence! The evening began with drinks and conversation, followed by a meal and desert (a variety of the ubiquitous but delicious English trifle--yummy!); and then the show began. Neither Nancy or I have ever been to a hat show before. The creations were astounding, but a little on the pricey side for social worker's budgets. Nevertheless, it was fun to try on some of the hats and learn a little about the complexities of making them.

Nancy and I just love thes village functions and are disappointed we'll be missing the village horticultural show and competition this weekend as we ready ourselves to visit in Oxford and Winchester before flying out on Monday.
