The beaches of Koh Lanta 2 hrs South of Krabi are quiet and a beachside private bungalow can be $4 - 50 US. The beach is beautiful and it is hard to imagine that the tsunami 2004 left thousands dead. The tsunami was a series of waves created by a 9.5 earthquake in the Indian sea. When the two shelves moves it displaced massive volumes of sea water and sent a ripple travelling towards Western Thailand at 500 - 800 km/hr. As the shore levels became lower the waves rose and slowed to 45 km/hr causing massive devastation to the shoreline and lowlands. Phi Phi islands have recovered but still lack funding for locals and volunteers struggle to develope work projects.

Longbeach is popular for Lanta and there is many restaurants and nightly beach parties on the island. You can spend the days diving (Lanta Divers) most companies are Scandanavian or European and there is a price agreement to various islands and reefs. Basic day trips from here and more liveaboards from Phuket Island (a major City nearby). Phuket is rumored to be hectic and unpleasant so I stayed on Lanta sitting on the bamboo restaurants watching the daily sunsets.

Rent a dirtbike and visit all sites on the island or go for a cheap Thai massage on the beach.
