Well whirlwind. I travelled from the colonial cobblestones in Antiqua to honduras already. The City of Antigua is very touristy, but beautiful and very lively. Not alot of tradianal dress and there is lots of tour companies. I am travelling with Paul, a Brit. and we drove South down a dirt road to the active volcano of Pacaya. Fantastic! Burping lava, sulpher smells, and deep green lanscapes all the way up except for the last 30 min hike along red and black steaming lava rocks.
very popular tour from Antigua. Books for about $5 US.
We continued on from there and ended up at the Villo Neuvo border in El Salvador. Easy cross only $10 and about 1 hr. Best yet. had some Popusas for supper, baked dough coveed with beats and cabbage etc. yum.
El Savlador as a whole is great. People and families are out late into the night just enjoying the warm nights. One day was beach day as we drove the Pacific shores near LaLibertad and tried briefly to surf. Toooo many rocks and wild waves!!
Small towns are the best. The best one - Suchitoto whre we went to the Lago (lake) enjoyed a beer on the shore around 10 am and then to an amazing restaurant. La Flora Mirar. Overlookinf the lake , hills with birds cirlcing overhead and ramba music in the air. we had the restaurant to ourselves and sat for about 3 hrs. More beer before noon. Pilsner a local brew gets a two thumbs up.
We actually drove across El savador in 3 hrs so as we entered the border we just looked at each other and laughed - well guess we are in Honduras. Poor map reading.
So after only 2 1/2 days - we left the beautiful and commercialized El Salvador. Skip San Salvador - DANGEROUS / PELIGOSO. Nasty parts of town. I didnīt even want to get a room there. We found one in a suburbia type area that rented by the hour. So 12 hrs later because we stayed in for the night drinking rum and listening to the radio from the ceiling speaker. All that was missing was the vibrating bed. Nasty town.
Now Honduras. Well $40 and 3 hrs at border of El Poy....we drove right into the mountains. Beautiful Blue and green. Different though, more pines and smaller leaves than the tropical foilage of Salvador and Guatemala.
Really spread out and our night in a university town of Santa Rosa de Copan was great. Full of life and music.
Today is my 4 month anniversary, so I treated Senor Shifty to a bath and topped up the oil. Samll rewards. About 25,000 km and unknow gas totals. But Honduras is $54 US a fill..ouch most yet. I have another 4 months and lots of miles left before I have crossed the Americas.
