Hola - well the flight was ok two connections, Vegas and Phoenix. Back at the Houston Hostel I reuinited with Shifty - hadnīt moved. I stayed in and watched part of a movie then I slept for 12 hrs. Woke at 10 AM and started driving to Corpus Christie. Nice town and Aransas is a great little beach town with stinky beaches. For $6 you can park and camp all summer. I went on to Harlington, South Texas and slept in the car at the tourist center. I picked up more oil at Walmart and drove to Progreso - 3 out of 4 said that was the safest. Nuevo Laredo has had 86 deaths in three weeks, nobody said whether it was locals or tourists. A little nervous I crossed the border. Not even a second glance they couldnīt care less. Well $50.00 and 2 hrs later I picked up my personal and auto permissio for 30 days and drove to Reynosa. A dirty city much like the rest of Mexico so far. Locals selling everything from chilets to hats and motherīs begging for change in the rain. I made it as far as San Fernando a simple little town only paved roads on the main and $30.00 US (300 pesos) for a really big clean hotel room with AC. Again after a quick meal I went back to the hotel to stay in. Studied my spanish and slept.
7AM I am off to Ciudad Victoria where I am writing this log. Fair sized City with lots of traffic. Shifty has many relatives here and fits in great. I could use more tint. That too is available on the street. Well I am going on a big hike in the mountains just South of here recommended by Lonely Planet and then to Tampico and then Xatapa. Two coastal cities. The Gulf storms really trashed this part of Mexico. There is tin roofs all over the fields and only cement homes survived the winds. Flooding is a major problem almost washing out the roads, but the locals (always smiling) are fishing or fixing telephone /power lines while standing in knee deep water. Lots of domestic animals are the common road kill - that never gets picked up, along with garbage , tires and cement chunks. Suprisingly the highways are really good and smooth so far.
I am getting around really good with minimal spanish but it would be good to travel with others. Only +25 C here, so nice.
