Well Hershey was taste! As you left the City of Philly on I76 you entered gren field of corn and wheat and then you encounter the smell of chocolate as you enter Hershey. Massive place with amusement parks, etc. I drove to Gettysberg - famous for the civil war that cost the lives of about 600,000 Americans in 3 days, 1863. after a candle-light ghost tour around the town I stayed overnight in Shifty. Up early and drove into York, one of the oldest working firehalls in USA. Still use whole punch tapes and gong as tradition for their dipatch. The the Harley assembly factory tour. Pretty neat stuff. 800 / day go out. Massive! 4000 lb fender presses and robotics.
I went South in to Virginia from there and stopped at the National Fierfighter Memorial. A circle of the maltese cross with names all over the brick floor surrounded by flags with an iron maltese and flame in the middle.
The people in Virginia are great. Much unlike Maryland. Good Southern Hospitality they say. Well I was directed to www.campcanoe.com in Richardsville, VA. I drove there down some back roads and ended up along the Rhappahanne River where I went Kayaking for 5 hours the next morning. Peaceful. I saw white tail deer, heron, massive hawks and eagles, turtles. Didn't see any 5 ft black snakes that eat the smaller poisonous ones. Thank god - I always tried to steer away from overhanging trees. Some rapids too but fairly low waters.
Drove onto the Skyline View of the Blue Mountains. Awesome!! Increadible ribbons of roads and small pitstops every mile. Viewpoints and 2 - 8 mile hikes everywhere. I stopped at Hawksbill 4500 ft elevation for a short hike and 360 view.
Stayed the night at campsite further down and hung out with my neighbors. Chris 14 year son of a crack mom in jail and his biological dad who was a sailer, mechanic, electrician, reverand- serious (he has conversations with Jesus) and now trucker. Absolutley histarical night, we shared red neck jokes and beers around the fire he started with about a liter of citronella oil.
