I find I am losing track of time, but if this is Monday morning the 10th of May, this must be La Coruna, Spain.
We were told back in Lisbon that we were under the path of the volcanic ash drifting overhead from Iceland. I hear that lots of flights are still being interrupted because of it. Maybe it contributed something to the really nasty dark days we've been experiencing.
We departed Lisbon at 2 AM, Sunday and since then have been cruising almost due North. We were cruising at 23.5 knots and had an additional 7 knots head wind which made for very cool conditions topsides, despite the 59 deg F temperature. Amazingly the ship is quite steady with very little rocking and rolling; perhaps due to the stabilizers that are somewhat like wings that the ship can deploy to counteract rough seas
I've ratcheted up my time on the stationary bike in the gym in anticipation of the cycling that lies ahead in Germany. Hannelore and Reinhard E-mailed that they plan to meet me in Marburg with their bikes, and plan to travel a couple of days with me. I know we will have a good time together. It is so nice of them to drive all the way from Munich to join me, not in the least to make sure I don't goof up on my German map reading ability and cycle off to who knows where?, or heaven forbid, exhaust my finite stamina reserves. I have easily managed in ideal weather to cycle 30 miles in one day and repeated it the next, but never have I done it every day for seven consecutive days. I rather expect each consecutive day to become more trying, considering the potential of adverse wind, rain and temperature, compounded by muscle fatigue and unfamiliar routing. But then, I did ask for it, didn't I? If this weather is an indication of things to come, it's like, I don't want to think about it.
