We woke up this morning to a dreary, drab, drizzly day. Our main attraction, beautiful Crater Lake, was no where to be seen in the dense fog. Consequently, our memories of Crater Lake National Park would become something entirely different.
We ended up at a small cabin where the National Park Service was showing movies of the Kilauea volcanic eruption in Kilauea Iki Crater in Hawaii. The eruptions occurred from November 14 to December 20, 1959 and produced some of Kilauea's most spectacular lava fountains of the 20th century. Momma, Terri & I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film. http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/history/1959Nov14/#episodes
After the movie, we went to an area with a coffee shop & gift shop. It was here we saw the newspaper headline about Marilyn Monroe's death. This was the second unrelated event that we all think of when we remember Crater Lake.
We stayed at Crater Lake a second day, hoping to see the magnificent lake. The fog cleared ever so slightly and we were able to see a small view of the lake below. We were so close yet so far away from experiencing this wonderful national park. For now, Crater Lake would always be Kilauea and Marilyn Monroe!
