49 awesome days came down to one last morning! We probably were in no hurry to get "on our way" today. It would be at least 4 years before we would really camp again, but, of course, we didn't know this today.

We were up at 6:30 AM; it was a brisk 60 degrees. We packed the station wagon for the last time and left at 8:00 AM, headed south down the parkway towards Asheville, North Carolina. It was here we departed the Blue Ridge Parkway and the peaceful tranquility of the mountains. We stopped for a few hours in Hendersonville, North Carolina at a shop called "Ruth of Carolina." This outlet store sold a quality brand of children's clothes that Momma could buy for a fraction of the cost back in Macon. In those days, we didn't have any local outlet stores where we could purchase less expensive clothes, so Momma found this store and dressed us in style for less.

Finally, at 3:00 PM, we were on our way, for the last time. Our trip home took about 6 hours. Once we arrived, we would look forward to getting our film developed so we could see the trip in pictures. Things were so different then: getting the pictures developed was almost like reliving the trip all over again! Momma had already sent the movie film to be developed so most of our movies were waiting for us to get out the projector and set up the screen!

Our 1962 California Adventure was truly the trip of a lifetime! Momma, Terri and I took four more cross-country trips from Georgia to California in the years to come, but none of them ever compared to our very first trip. I am so grateful that Momma took the initiative (and had the determination) to dream up this vacation and make it a reality. I never would have imagined what a wonderful experience it would be when I replied:

"Yes, I would LOVE to go to Disneyland!"

This account was so much fun to read, You are so lucky that you have a Mom who was independent enough to do this back when women did not normally travel "alone".

Connie, I recently found out that Steve & Paul Heath & their Mom and Cathy Rice & her Mom all took the same trip together during the summer of 1962! Apparently, both Dads were in National Guard at the time so the Moms took the kids out West.

It WAS a wonderful opportunity that I appreciate now more than ever!
