We spent the day wandering around San Pedro. First, a quick breakfast of pastries and coffee and tea downstairs at Ruby's Cafe. We were looking forward to the bacon and egg Johnny Cakes, but they were out. We'll have to see if we can find out what the heck they are another day. While walking just north of town, we turned back to see a huge black smoke cloud coming from the vicinity of the airstrip. Turned out it was Wings Department Store on fire. We wandered over and watched the firefighting progress for a while. We found out later it had been burning since midnight and they weren't exactly winning the war. Had to call in reinforcements from Belize City, since the local volunteer fire department has little equipment. Nice. Then we stopped at a nearby bar and talked with an American who said he was getting out of a multi-million dollar development north of town because of Belizean red tape. We continued down the beach to Crazy Canuck's where we had Belikens and burritos. On our way back into town we stopped at Island Internet, which we had seen for sale online. Seemed too far away from things to be profitable. We also stopped at Changes in Lattitudes, a lesbian-owned B&B where we had wanted to stay, but they were full. We chatted a while with the owners, Renita and Cindy, about their business and how they love living in Belize.
In the afternoon, we went to an internet cafe to upload my blog and send a few emails. We also called Kelli, the girl who had asked me to bring some t-shirts to Belize for her. We stopped at the Hangover Bar at the Holiday Hotel for a drink and when we got back to Ruby's, she was there waiting for us. We talked about island life and how she was able to manage a business here. She also gave us some insights into Belizean red tape and promised to show us around town later in the week.
Then it was on to the Pier Lounge and the "world-famous" chicken drop. We bought our tickets to guess which numbered square a rooster would poop on. Hey, it's Belize. We didn't win. We moved on aound 8:00 to Wild Mango's for a great dinner. I had chicken adobo and Frank had pork chops. We wandered aound town some more looking at real estate for sale including a restaurant/bar on Front Street for sale for $149,000. Promising!
