The Gili Islands was the perfect place to recover from Gunang Rinjani. I think it is the nicest island that I have been too. The Gili's consist of three tiny islands off the coast of Lombok. They have no police and govern themselves, motorised transport and dogs are banned making a very peaceful and tranquil environment - and very happy cats. We opted for Gili Trawangan the furthest offshore of the three, although they are that close together you can almost see the life occurring on the other islands. The island was beautiful. The population of the island was only 800 and you can walk right around the island in a couple of hours.

It was the perfect place to recoup. It took us about four days until are legs returned to normal from the trek. Taking steps either up or down was a problem and every time we didn't move for more than 10-20 minutes out legs would stiffen up and it would take a bit of walking to get them going again. The island was very sleepy though, apart from the dedicated party nights, and there were hardly any shops and virtually no hawkers so it was a nice quiet life of chilling on the beach.

We had planned to stay for three days leaving 1.5 back in Bali before Sarah had to fly but it was too nice a place to leave and we stayed right until the last minute and arrived back in Kuta in the evening just in time for Sarah's morning flight. It really was a beautiful place with the clearest water ever and beaches right around the island with long strips of nice white sand and not many people. The main activity apart from relaxing was diving but the most energetic things we achieved were watching the amazing sunsets over Bali and sunrises over Gunung Rinjani. If we had more time we definitely would have stayed longer.
