Arriving in Padang was a nice change, only two hours from Padang Padjang I arrived feeling nice and refreshed. Padang is a big sprawling city but it also had a beach so you can escape the city and find a nice open space, and being west facing enjoy nice sunsets. Although it is seriously not a beach to don your shorts and relax as it's very narrow and you would have to complete with the rubbish to find some space. It does have a nice strip of food stalls though along the main road overlooking the beach which is a nice place to hang out.

The bemo's in Padang are amazing. They are seriously beefed up with neon lights and huge speakers and they cruise around the city at speed blasting Indonesian house or hip hop giving the city a more energetic vibe compared to its somewhat more rundown feel. Padang also boasts the fastest internet connection I've found in Indonesia, and free - all you need to do is buy a drink. As with everywhere I've encountered in Sumatra the locals are pleased to see foreigners and are openly friendly and welcoming.

Ribwan travelled back with me so we hung out together of an evening and although there was nothing specifically to see of a day time I had a good time walking around the city meeting people whilst he was in University. Ribwan introduced me to my new favourite food, Tahu Tempe. Tahu is big chunks of deep fried tofu and tempeh is like a cake of whole soya beans fermented for 24-36 hours and served in slices. Tahu Tempeh is served with rice and salad and of course the ubiquitous sambal. I'm finding it hard to go through a day without a craving for Tahu Tempeh although a close second is Gado Gado a warm salad of greens, egg and potatoes in a spicy peanut sauce.

I stayed in Padang for two days before hitting the road again and continuing south to my final call in Sumatra.
